Gateway Classic Cars of Scottsdale is proud to offer this sought-after 1964 Studebaker Avanti for sale on consignment with our Arizona showroom, located in North Phoenix. The Avanti was one of the fastest and most advanced American vehicles ever made when it hit showroom floors in 1962. The orders came flying in but Studebaker's problem was they couldn't keep pace with demand. The Avanti had a complex fiberglass body construction that required more time and skilled labor to produce than customers had patience for. Buyers grew tired of waiting and canceled their orders, meanwhile parent company Studebaker's financial woes and death spiral continued to worsen. The short 18-month production run for the Avanti ended in December 1963 with less than 5,000 cars built in total- this car would have been built in late '63 but titled as a 1964. This car is painted in Black and has all kinds of design quirks from the curved sides, coke-bottle beltline and a jacked up rear end that gave the car a wedge-like profile from the side. It has a European grand tourer look that many American-made cars at the time were struggling to replicate. For power, Studebaker pulled the 289 CID V8 engine straight from its Hawk and in naturally aspirated form like this car it would have put out around 240 factory rated horsepower. The engine pulls strong in every gear and the transmission (a 4-speed manual) is easy to use with a light clutch. The throaty mufflers with dual exiting pipes really help this car sound as good as it looks and turn a lot of heads. [ omitted ]. There's even a functional cubby to access the trunk compartment in the back seats- probably a nod to the “family" element of this 4-passenger car so the kids could access the cooler in the trunk while driving! You already know that this 1964 Studebaker is worth taking a look at for collectability alone. [ omitted ]. [ omitted ].
