Description
A rare World War 2 Japanese flag/scarf that was seized by the US Army's Anti-aircraft Division, the 94th Coastal Artillery, that my Dad, Frank Kundo, was serving in during the period of time from 1942 to 1944 in Papau, New Guinea. The flag/scarf appears to be made of silk. The scarf measures approximately 29" long and 27" wide. The colors in this item are rust and light brown colors. On the rust colored triangle, there are 3 cranes. In Japan, cranes were mystical or holy creatures that symbolized good fortune and longevity because of the bird's fabled life span of a thousand years. (I'm guessing this flag/scarf was given to a Japanese soldier for good luck by his family prior to flying bombing runs in the Pacific Theatre during WW2.)
My Dad passed away almost 20 years ago. I didn't get the chance to ask him about this item. I'm guessing that a Japanese pilot was shot down by my Dad's anti-aircraft artillery group and they found this item in the wreckage. There appear to be blood stains on parts of this flag/scarf (but I'm not totally sure what the stains actually are). Picture 8 shows the back side of this item that is not as colorful as the front side. Included are the photos shown in pictures 9-11, one picture shows my Dad's Army buddies holding up the flag/scarf (see picture 9). The other photos shows US soldiers holding up a skull, picture of my Dad in an gun bunker with one of the anti-aircraft guns with "TOJOS DOOM" painted on the side of the gun barrel, two pictures of my Dad on another anti-aircraft gun that has 8 Rising Sun flags painted on the barrel (guessing that was how many Japanese planes that had been shot down) and a picture of my Dad laying in the shade near the base around Papau, New Guinea. Picture 11 shows the back sides of the photos, 4 have stamps by the US Army Examiner on whether they were passed or were censored and could not be mailed during the war. Also included is a copy of my Dad's Enlisted Record that shows he was in Papau, New Guinea serving as an anti-aircraft gunner from 1942-1944.
